Dental Sealants

Dental sealants play a huge role in preventative pediatric dentistry, designed to shield your child's vulnerable tooth surfaces from cavities. These thin, protective coatings are usually applied to the chewing surfaces of molars and sometimes premolars; these are the teeth with deep grooves and pits that may trap food particles and plaque. Sealants act as an effective barrier, preventing acids and germs from settling into tiny fissures that are too narrow to clean with a toothbrush. In turn, brushing is more effective, and these surfaces are less likely to develop tooth decay.

Your child's dental sealant application is quick, painless, and fear-free. Dr. Sarah or one of our certified dental assistants can apply sealants to teeth in a matter of a few minutes; in many cases, we can add the procedure to your child's regularly scheduled checkup. First, the tooth's surface is thoroughly cleaned and etched, and then the sealant material is applied. Then, a special curing light is used to harden the sealant material, creating an invisible yet potent shield.
